The medicine does not always give you what you need. Sometimes, whether because of set or setting or some undetermined factor, a trip can be a nightmare. And you nailed it when calling that concept "theological." That's exactly what it is—the belief that somehow the molecules have intelligence and agency and can reach into the human psyche to deliver the miraculous key to our needs.

Nope. Sometimes, for whatever reason, psychedelics can send us into a hellscape of depersonalization, anxiety, confusion, and leave us feeling broken. If we don't acknowledge that, the bubble Griffiths mentioned will break and it will result in a backlash similar to what we saw in the ’60s and ’70s.

Scientists need to stick to science and should not be proselytizers.
